St Anselms College and the surrounding urbanized Pinardville area anchor the northeastern corner of this landscape, where the Piscataquog River flows toward the F E Everett Turnpike. The terrain transitions from these developed spaces into the heavily ridged highlands of the Uncanoonuc Mountains, featuring North Mountain and South Mountain, the latter topped by a Lookout Tower and Radio Towers. These peaks overlook a network of smaller rural communities and family-named landmarks that define central Hillsborough County.

Historical interest is concentrated at the Horace Greeley Birthplace near Amherst, while the southern reaches are dominated by Baboosic Lake and Little Baboosic Lake. The Boston and Maine Railroad cuts through the southern woodlots near the McQuade Grade. Traces of the region's agricultural and industrial past are visible in the numerous Gravel Pits and the proximity of the U.S. Military Reservation at the western edge, providing a detailed look at land use before suburban expansion moved further into the hills.
