About this map

The San Andreas Rift Zone creates a dramatic geological corridor through this coastal landscape, separating the rugged shoreline from the inland drainages of the South Fork Gualala River. In the mid-1970s, this area of the Sonoma coast remained largely defined by its public lands and scattered small settlements like Plantation and Windermere Point. The map captures the significant preservation efforts of the era, including the Salt Point State Park and the specialized Kruse Rhododendron State Reserve, which protect the coastal bluffs and gulches. Evidence of earlier maritime and pioneer life is visible at Walsh Landing and the small Cooper Cem. The topography is dominated by steep coastal ridges and numerous named gulches, such as Chinese Gulch and Cannon Gulch, that drop sharply into the Pacific Ocean.
