Plug Hat Ranch and the surrounding high mesa country of Las Animas County are defined by a network of ephemeral drainages and named topographic landmarks. The landscape is characterized by prominent elevations such as Alexander Mesa, Pinkney Hill, and the sheer rise of Eagle Cliff in the northern reaches. These features overlook a series of canyons including Cahill Canyon and Aunt Jane Canyon, which carve through the plateau.
