The Pointe aux Chenes shoreline along Lake Michigan defines this portion of the Upper Peninsula within the Hiawatha National Forest. The landscape is dominated by the complex hydrology of the Pointe aux Chenes Marshes and the drainage of the Brevoort River as it moves toward the lake. This 2023 survey illustrates a wilderness preserved for recreation, showing the modern path of the North Country National Scenic Trl and its connection to the Sand Dunes/nct Connector Trl. North of the coastal marshes, the terrain shifts toward significant inland water bodies, including the southern reaches of Brevoort Lake and the smaller Round Lake. Evidence of seasonal use is found in the Castle Rock Snomo Trl, which traverses the wooded interior between the shoreline and the marshy lowlands.
