Pony Lake and a constellation of smaller basins define this corner of the Sandhills, where the porous landscape is shaped by wind-deposited dunes and a high water table. The hydrology of the region is centered on these shallow water bodies, including Wolf Lake, Goose Lake, and Otter Lake, which serve as critical features in an otherwise arid grazing landscape. The S Fork Elkhorn River makes a brief appearance in the northwest, beginning its long journey eastward across the state.
