Effigy Mounds National Monument and the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge dominate the riverine landscape where the Yellow River meets the Mississippi River. This 2018 survey reveals the complex hydrology of the Upper Mississippi, where numerous islands such as Scrogum Island and Saint Feriole Island are separated by the East Channel and various sloughs. On the Wisconsin side, Prairie du Chien is established on the broad river terrace, while the Iowa side features the dramatic bluffs of McGregor and Marquette tucked into the coulees.
