The Mississippi River creates a complex landscape of islands and sloughs at the confluence with the Wisconsin River in this 1962 survey. Two major railroads dominate the riverfront economy, with the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific running along the Iowa shore through the village of Clayton, and the Chicago Burlington and Quincy following the Wisconsin bank through Wyalusing. The river valley is preserved within the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife and Fish Refuge, which encompasses numerous landforms like Island 176 and Catfish Slough.
