About this map

Waikoloa sits as a primary inland hub on the South Kohala coast, contrasting the modern development of the late twentieth century against a landscape forged by volcanic history. The vast Kani Ku Lava Flow and the Lava Flow of 1859 dominate the southern half of the map, carving paths toward the Pacific Ocean and Kawaihae Bay. Along the shoreline, the ancient maritime heritage of the island is preserved at the Lahuipuaa archaeological area, featuring the Lahuipuaa Fishpond and Hopeala Fishpond.
