Recent volcanic activity on the Island of Hawai‘i is the primary sculptor of this landscape, as seen in the extensive footprints of the Lava Flow of 1926, the Lava Flow of 1949, and the Lava Flow of 1950. These flows surround geological features like Pu‘ukinikini and the specialized ecology of Kīpuka‘aiaka‘alalā. The terrain is deeply incised by numerous seasonal watercourses, including Waihaka Gulch, Ka‘ala‘ala Gulch, and Keāīwa Gulch, which drain the southeastern slopes toward the coast.
