Ramsey and the surrounding borderlands of New York and New Jersey are defined by the convergence of the Ramapo River valley and the Ramapo Mountains. This survey documents a landscape of established suburban settlements and industrial history, from the bustling corridor of Suffern and Mahwah to the residential centers of Waldwick and Franklin Lakes. A distinct concentration of historic church grounds, including the Ramapo Reformed Church Cem and Wyckoff Reformed Church Cem, marks the deep-rooted local heritage of the region.

Water management and small-scale industry are evident in the many reservoirs and mill sites scattered throughout the terrain. Named features such as Pulis Mills and Ferdinands Mills recall an earlier era of local production along the tributary brooks. The topography rises sharply to the west toward Mt Defiance and Bald Mtn, providing a stark contrast to the developed valley floors where the Erie Railroad once anchored the local economy.
