Bear Valley and Woods Valley dominate the residential and agricultural heart of this landscape, situated just northeast of Escondido. The area is defined by a complex network of canyons and ridges, including the deep cuts of Horsethief Canyon and Boden Canyon which contrast with the level reaches of Sycamore Flats and Cienaga Flats. Water management infrastructure is prominent, notably the Escondido Canal and the southern edge of Lake Wohlford, reflecting the region's reliance on imported and stored water to support its development.
