Balta sits along the southern edge of this West Central Kansas landscape, positioned where the energy industry meets the winding drainages of the Smoky Hills region. In 2009, the rural economy is defined by active extraction, visible through the S And S Oil Field, Gorham Oil Field, and the Russell Oil Field. The terrain is deeply incised by the Saline River in the north and the meandering courses of Salt Creek and Fossil Creek. A network of section-line roads, such as Canyon Rd and Land Rd, provides access to these remote operations and agricultural tracts. The presence of Old US Hwy 40 and Balta Ln reflects the historical transportation corridor that preceded modern interstate travel, maintaining the late-20th-century character of this Russell County prairie.
