The Bitterroot Mountains define this high-altitude landscape along the border of Idaho and Montana, where the Idaho Co Ravalli Co line meets the state boundary. This area is characterized by significant topographic relief and protected lands, split between the Nez Perce National Forest and the Bitterroot National Forest. The presence of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness ensures the preservation of the numerous water systems that drain these peaks, including Big Creek and Wahoo Creek. High-mountain passes such as Wahoo Pass and Lost Horse Pass provide traditional crossings through the steep terrain. Small bodies of water like Battle Lake, Mud Lake, and Bailey Lake are tucked into the drainages below prominent features like Saddle Mtn and Goat Heaven Peaks, accessible only by primitive routes such as the Bailey Lake Trl.
