Humboldt National Forest dominates the southern reaches of this landscape, where the high elevations of the White Pine Range and Pogonip Ridge drop away into the broad expanse of Newark Valley. The terrain is defined by a series of steep drainages including Seligman Canyon, Mohawk Canyon, and McEllen Canyon, which historically served as corridors for travel and resource access. Small reliable water sources such as Emigrant Spring, Allan Spring, and Seligman Spring provide critical landmarks in an otherwise arid environment.
