The Mississippi River forms the central spine of this Missouri-Illinois borderlands survey, defining a landscape of low-lying islands and complex drainage patterns. In Missouri, the community of Selma and the residential pocket of Arbor Place are surrounded by numerous family and community burial grounds, including Cook Cemetery, Barsotti Cemetery, and Lucas Cemetery. The geography is deeply etched by a series of hollows that drain toward the river, such as Selma Hollow, Cliffdale Hollow, and Doolin Hollow.
