The Montana Mountains rise sharply in the northeast corner of this high-desert landscape, where the Sheep Ranch Springs provide a vital water source in an otherwise arid region. The eastern edge of the quadrangle follows the Kings River Valley, tracing the course of the Kings River and its tributary, Thacker Cr. This 2018 survey shows a land defined by vast range allotments and a sparse network of service roads such as Ninemile Rd and Allen Farms Rd. To the south, the Coyote Hills and the point at Coyote Pt break the flat expanse of the valley floor. The map illustrates the contemporary management of the Great Basin, where long-established landmarks like Kings River Rd continue to provide the primary access through this remote portion of Humboldt County.
