South Fork and the adjacent settlements of Alpine and Gerrard sit at the confluence of mountain waters in this 2016 survey of Rio Grande County. The landscape is defined by a sophisticated network of irrigation infrastructure including the Meadow Ditch, Anaconda Ditch, and S Fork Highline Ditch, which divert water from the Rio Grande to support the local valley. To the north, the Morning Shadows Ranch Airport serves as a small aviation outpost near the boundary of Saguache and Rio Grande counties.
