South Mountain anchors the high desert landscape of Malheur County, where the southern flow of the Malheur River cuts through the bottom of the quadrangle. This 2017 survey reflects a remote ranching and grazing environment characterized by a sophisticated network of small-scale water management. Numerous basins and improved springs are distributed across the terrain, including the Hog Cr Reservoir Number Two, Alfred Reservoir, and Tub Springs Reservoir.
