Red Rock Rd serves as the primary artery through this high-altitude landscape in Las Animas County, where the terrain is defined by a series of dramatic geographic depressions and elevations. The eastern portion of the sheet is marked by the distinct Black Hills and Cedar Hill, overlooking a network of drainages that include Welsh Canyon and Sugarloaf Canyon. Water sources in this arid environment are sparse but significant, notably Sugarloaf Spring located just south of the hills.

In the southern reaches, Lockwood Arroyo cuts through the land near the confluence of Lockwood Canyon and Red Rock Canyon. This 2013 survey illustrates a classic Western landscape where human infrastructure is minimal, represented largely by the section lines of the Public Land Survey System and the single north-south passage of Red Rock Road, leaving much of the territory to its natural formations.
