About this map

The town of Stetson and its neighboring townships in Penobscot County were defined by a dense network of small rural schoolhouses and neighborhood centers in the early 1930s. This survey, conducted by topographic engineers including Fred Graff, Jr. and W.F. Chenault, captures the area when local education was decentralized into institutions like the Holy Rollers Sch, Lincoln League Sch, and the more prominent East Corinth Academy. The landscape is a mix of agricultural clearings and wetlands, notably the Greenbush Swamp, with commerce centered around water-powered sites such as French Mill on French Stream and Mcgregor Mill near East Corinth. Transportation in the southern portion of the quadrangle is anchored by the Maine Central railroad corridor, which served smaller depots like Damascus Sta and connected rural communities to the broader regional economy.
