The town of Stevensville serves as the focal point for this Bitterroot Valley survey, a landscape defined by significant cultural landmarks and conservation efforts. To the west of the settlement lies the St Marys Mission and the nearby St Marys Cem, alongside the Fort Owen (Historical Site). This area represents one of the earliest colonial footholds in the region, where the agricultural valley meets the foothills of the Bitterroot National Forest.

The Bitterroot River meanders through the center of the sheet, buffered by the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge. The irrigation infrastructure required for valley farming is evident in the East Side Canal and the Supply Ditch, which redirect water from various mountain drainages. Along the western edge, the Historical National Clark and Lewis Trail follows the river corridor, tracing the path taken by early explorers through this Montana corridor.
