The Selway River carves a deep path through the Nez Perce National Forest in this part of Idaho County, defining the central corridor of this wilderness landscape. Settlement is extremely sparse, centered on the Twentymile Bar river access point, where the Selway Rd follows the water's edge. This 2017 edition records the complex drainage system of the Clearwater Mountains, with numerous tributaries such as Twentymile Cr, Island Cr, and Falls Cr feeding the main river. High-elevation vantage points like Stillman Point, Saddle Ridge, and O'Hara Point look down upon the river valley, while smaller landmarks like Rock Island mark the river's course. Access to the high ridges is maintained through a network of forest service roads, including Nat For Dev Rd 9716 and Falls Point Rd.
