Green Swamp dominates the northern reaches of this coastal Carolina landscape, a complex environment of low-lying wetlands and elevated islands. The terrain is defined by a network of “islands” and “bays” that rise just above the water table, including Big Island, Little Island, and Bear Pen Islands. This natural topography dictates the settlement pattern, with the primary communities of Prospect, Supply, and Doe Creek clustered on the more stable ground to the south.

Transport and commerce follow the higher ridges, most notably along Makatoka Rd NW and Prospect Ridge. Evidence of local history and genealogy is preserved at the Prospect Cem and Galloway Cem, while the Lockwoods Folly River and its various tributaries like Royal Oak Swamp drain the region toward the Atlantic. The presence of Bear Pen Airport in the northern wetlands suggests the varied land use of this region in the early twenty-first century.
