Wittens Fort and the town of Tazewell anchor the northern reaches of this map, situated where the Clinch River begins its course through the Appalachian landscape. The terrain is defined by the massive ridge of Clinch Mountain and the deep expanse of Thompson Valley, which cuts a long path between the parallel heights of Knob Mtn and Rich Mtn. This geography dictated the movement of early settlers, as seen in the route of the Fincastle Tpke and the historic Trl of the Lonesome Pine.

In the southern portion of the quadrangle, the Jefferson National Forest covers high elevations like Big Doubles and Little Doubles. Smaller communities and named locales such as Frog Level, Pisgah, and Asberrys are scattered along the valley floors, linked by rural roads following the drainage of Maiden Spring Cr and Laurel Cr. This 2016 survey documents the enduring spatial relationship between the valley floor settlements and the steep, forested mountainsides of the Virginia-West Virginia borderlands.
