Kisatchie National Forest covers the northern reaches of this Louisiana landscape, where the pine-dominated terrain is etched by an intricate network of drainage branches and bayous. In the vicinity of Mora, rural life is oriented around timber management and the varied topography of Cypress Br and Gum Br. To the south, the settlements of Temple and Simpson sit along the corridors that separate the forest from the wetlands of Devil Swamp.

Evidence of early family settlement is preserved through isolated burial sites like Comrade Cem near the headwaters of Comrade Cr, and the Blackwell Cem further east near Burnstown. The hydrology of the area is particularly distinct, defined by the winding courses of Bayou Celestine and Bayou Pine Coupee, which dictate the placement of winding roads like Fate Martin RD and Comrade RD across the Vernon and Rapides Parish lines.
