Massanutten Mountain dominates the eastern half of this landscape, its steep ridges and deep hollows like Lokey Hollow and Koontz Hollow defining the boundary between Rockingham and Page counties. Much of this elevated terrain is protected within the George Washington National Forest, where the topography rises to distinctive peaks such as Bird Knob and Morgan Knob. To the east, the land drops into the Page Valley, where the South Fork Shenandoah River winds past Shuler Island and the town of Shenandoah.

The western valley floor is dotted with small settlements and family-named landmarks that reflect a long history of rural habitation. Clusters like Tenth Legion, Mauzy, and Arkton are connected by the N Valley Pike, while more secluded locations like Catherine Furnace and Athlone sit at the forest's edge. Genealogists may find interest in the Rinaca Cem near the river, or the various named rises such as Roark Hill and Lincoln Hill that suggest decades of local landholding patterns.
