About this map

Bigelow Mountain dominates this portion of Somerset and Franklin counties, where the high ridgeline of the Bigelow Range meets the vast waters of Flagstaff Lake. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail traverses the crest, passing over the twin summits of The Horns and West Peak before reaching Avery Peak, which is marked by a Lookout Tower. This landscape is defined by the tension between the flooding of the Dead River basin and the steep mountain terrain, with family-named landmarks like Jim Eaton Hill and Picked Chicken Hill rising above the shorelines. Smaller bodies of water including Spring Lake and The Horns Pond dot the wilderness, while numerous drainages such as Hurricane Brook and Safford Bk feed into the primary river system. The map captures a region primarily used for timber and recreation, indicated by the various Campsites and a Boat Ramp along the irregular lake margins.
