Thoeny sits in the high plains of northern Valley County, just south of the Canadian border in a landscape defined by seasonal drainages and coulees. This 2017 topographic study highlights the rural infrastructure of the region, anchored by the Hill Crest Cem and the junction of Theony Rd and McEachron Rd. The terrain is etched by the complex hydrology of McEachern Cr and its various tributaries, including Rock Cr, Bluff Cr, and Chambers Cr. These watercourses, along with named features like Dolson Coulee and Davison Coulee, dictate the local topography and the placement of remote ranch roads. The map illustrates a contemporary view of this sparsely populated borderland, where public land survey systems continue to organize the vast open stretches of the Missouri Plateau.
