N.H. Darton's reconnaissance of this high desert landscape reveals a network of remote ranching outposts and vital water sources established during the early 20th century. Scattered across the basin are family-named landmarks like Flat Lake Ranch, Turney Ranch, and Detroit Ranch, which relied on a series of critical watering points including Red Lake well, Summerford well, and South well. The terrain is dominated by the dramatic uplift of the San Andres Range to the east and the Rio Grande corridor to the southwest.
