Mesa Verde National Park defines the northwestern reaches of this terrain, where the high tablelands of Mesa Verde drop off toward the canyon floor. The Mancos River winds through the western landscape, cutting past the East Rim and into the depths of Mancos Canyon. This area represents a transition from the protected federal parklands to the agricultural and ranching country of the Montezuma and La Plata county border.
