About this map

Elephant Butte Reservoir and the Rio Grande define the eastern corridor of this Sierra County landscape, where the high desert meets the formidable Black Range. In the late 1970s, the namesake city of Truth or Consequences served as the primary hub for the region, positioned near the waters of Elephant Butte Lake State Park and Caballo Reservoir. The western reaches of the map are defined by the steep terrain of the Continental Divide, which separates the drainages of Diamond Creek and Chloride Creek. This area preserves a history of mineral exploration, evidenced by scattered operations like the Republic Mine, Midnight Mine, and Yellowjacket Mine deep within the Gila National Forest. Small settlements such as Winston, Chloride, and Cuchillo dot the landscape, connected by a network of state roads that wind through the Sierra Cuchillo and toward the eastern plains of the Jornada del Muerto.
