The Upham Hills rise from the desert floor north of the county line between Sierra and Doña Ana counties. This arid landscape is defined by its drainage patterns and prominent geological landmarks, most notably the distinctive Point of Rocks in the southwestern portion of the quadrangle. As the land slopes toward the Rio Grande valley further west, ephemeral water features such as Rincon Arroyo and Lyons Draw carve through the basin.
