Islamorada serves as the focal point of this coastal survey, situated within the Islamorada, Village of Islands and bridging the transition from Florida Bay to the Atlantic Ocean. The landscape is defined by the narrow corridor of Upper Matecumbe Key, where residential and commercial development aligns with the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trl and the original Old Hwy. Navigational channels like the Intracoastal Waterway and Steamboat Channel cut through the surrounding flats, while the western portion of the map is preserved within the boundaries of Everglades National Park. Smaller landmasses such as Lignumvitae Key and Indian Key provide historic points of interest amidst a complex network of shallow banks and basins, including the Peterson Key Bank and Shell Key Bank. This modern survey documents the high density of maritime recreation and conservation areas that characterize the upper keys today.
