Ute Mtn dominates the high desert terrain of the northern Taos plateau, rising sharply above the deep cut of the Rio Grande gorge. This 2013 survey documents a unique ecological and geopolitical borderland where the Rio Grande Wild River corridor marks the western edge of the mountain’s slopes. The landscape is defined by the sharp transition from the agricultural operations at Top of the World Farms on the eastern plateau to the dramatic topographic descent into the Cañon del Rio Grande. To the north, the winding course of Costilla Cr crosses the state line, illustrating the complex drainage patterns that feed into the river canyon. The map details the remote road network of the High Plains, including CO Road B-050 and CO Road 29, which navigate the wide-open spaces between the Colorado-New Mexico border and the volcanic heights of the Ute massif.
