The rolling plains of Jones County define this section of central South Dakota as it appeared in the early 21st century. The landscape is primarily shaped by the drainage patterns of several seasonal watercourses, most notably Pitan Cr which meanders through the western and southern reaches of the map. These drainages, including Williams Cr to the east and the headwaters of Bull Cr in the southwest, dictate the orientation of the few established thoroughfares.
