Waucoba Mountain and the high desert terrain of the Inyo Mountains dominate this mid-1990s survey. Much of the landscape is protected within the Inyo National Forest and the Inyo Mountains Wilderness, characterized by dramatic elevation changes across high-altitude plateaus like Papoose Flat, Whippoorwill Flat, and Squaw Flat.

The presence of scattered Mine and Prospect sites throughout the hills, particularly near Andrews Mountain and the steep walls of Marble Canyon, suggests a history of mineral exploration in these remote ranges. A network of unimproved four-wheel-drive roads provides the only access through technical terrain such as The Narrows, illustrating the isolated nature of this section of Inyo County long after the surrounding valleys were settled.
