Positioned at the confluence of the Elk River and Back Fork Elk River, this area has long been defined by its steep terrain and river valleys. The town's layout follows the tight curves of the riverbanks, with prominent streets like S Main St and Union St hugging the narrow flatlands.

South of the main settlement, the landscape transitions into the heavily forested reaches of the Monongahela National Forest. Rural life is marked by small settlements such as Bolair, Upperglade, and Dyer, alongside a network of family and community burial grounds including Lynch Point Cem, Woods Cem, and the Sand Run Baptist Church Cem.
