Wedding Cake Butte and its distinctive neighbors Shiprock and Steamboat Butte define this arid landscape along the border of Las Animas County and New Mexico. The 2013 survey illustrates a high-desert environment shaped by the seasonal flow of the Dry Cimarron River, which cuts through the northern portion of the quadrangle. Human efforts to manage the limited water in this high-altitude region are evident in the presence of irrigation infrastructure like S Beheimer Ditch and Berry Ditch, supporting ranching and agricultural attempts in the shadow of the massive Black Mesa.
