The narrow outer arm of Cape Cod is defined by its interface with the Atlantic Ocean and a network of freshwater kettle ponds in this 2012 survey. Residential clusters at South Wellfleet and Wellfleet by the Sea occupy the high ground between the shoreline and the interior marshes of Fresh Brook. Along the oceanfront, a series of hollows and landings provide access to the coast, including Newcomb Hollow, Cahoon Hollow, and Maguire Landing.
