West Lake and the surrounding wilderness of Hancock County define this landscape, where a dense network of glacial ponds and streams drains toward the expansive Nicatous Lake. The terrain is characterized by prominent elevations such as West Lake Ridge and Morrison Ridge, which separate the various watersheds. In the western portion of the quadrangle, a distinctive chain of water bodies includes Upper Oxhead Pond, Middle Oxhead Pond, and Lower Oxhead Pond, connected by Oxhead Stream. These waters eventually feed into Guagus Stream as it meanders southward.
