Mt Diablo Base and Meridian and San Bernardino Base and Meridian converge in this high-altitude survey of Kern County, where the southern San Joaquin Valley meets the rising slopes of the Tehachapi Mountains. The early 1930s landscape is defined by the massive Wheeler Ridge and the development of regional infrastructure, notably the Tejon Substation and two major electrical corridors: the San Joaquin Light and Power Company Transmission Line and the Southern California Edison Company Transmission Line. Early aviation markers are also present, including an Airway Beacon and a Department of Commerce Landing Field, reflecting the era's expanding air travel routes through this mountain pass area. Natural drainage is traced through Tecuya Creek and Grapevine Creek, while the Maricopa Road provides the primary transit route through the foothills.
