West Rainy Butte and the adjacent Rainy Butte dominate the northern landscape of this Slope County region, rising sharply above the surrounding plains. The terrain is characterized by the meandering path of Chanta Peta Creek, which draws a winding line southward through the central part of the quadrangle. For genealogists and local historians, the map provides precise locations for the Carroll Township Cem and DeSart Cem in the southeastern corner, near the section lines of the Public Land Survey System. The sparse road network, including 130th Ave SW and 128th Ave SW, reflects the wide-open, rural character of this western North Dakota landscape, where land is still measured by the grids of Township 135 North, Range 99 West and its neighbors.
