Wetmore and Greenwood anchor the northern portion of this landscape, where the prairie begins its ascent into the front range. The terrain is defined by a dense network of drainages including Hardscrabble Cr and its various forks, which have carved deep canyons and gulches through the foothills. Much of the southern and western sections are contained within the San Isabel National Forest, characterized by high peaks such as Rudolph Mtn and prominent landmarks like Bears Head. A complex web of county roads, such as Silom Rd and Co Rd 389, traces the easier grades of the gulches, connecting ranching areas to the more established settlements. Geologic features like Little Red Butte and Big Red Butte stand as distinctive markers near the border of Custer and Pueblo counties, illustrating the transition from open range to the forested uplands of the Middle Hardscrabble drainage.
