Douglas Lake dominates the southern half of this Jefferson County landscape, where the inundated French Broad River valley created a complex shoreline of points and shoals. These submerged features, such as Copeland Shoals and Beaver Dam Shoals, speak to the geographical transformation of the region following the mid-century creation of the reservoir. To the north, the town of White Pine serves as a hub for a network of rural settlements and crossroads, including Leadvale and Kimbrough Crossroad. The area is characterized by numerous family and community burial grounds, from the Westminister Cem near the town center to the Swannsylvania Cem further south. Notable terrain features like Bays Mountain and McNabb Bluff provide vertical relief against the winding creek beds of Sinking Cr and Long Cr, illustrating the transition from upland ridges to the broad lake basin.
