The Mogollon Rim forms the primary structural divide of this landscape, separating the Mogollon Plateau to the north from the descending canyons of the south. This escarpment serves as the boundary between the Sitgreaves National Forest and the Tonto National Forest, as well as the county line for Coconino and Gila counties. Human settlement is concentrated in the southern valleys along State Hwy 260, where the communities of Christopher Creek, Hunter Creek, and Sleepy Hollow are situated near the headwaters of Hunter Cr and Christopher Mtn. High-altitude recreation and water management are prominent on the plateau, represented by Woods Canyon Lake and Willow Springs Lake. Notable geological and historical landmarks like the Military Sinkhole and Al Fulton Point dot the rim, while a network of forest roads like Rim Rd and the Chamberlain Trl provide access through the dense woodland and rugged drainage systems of Woods Canyon and Chevelon Canyon.
