The Appalachian National Scenic Trail winds through this Piscataquis County landscape, crossing the West Branch Penobscot River near a series of significant whitewater features. The river’s course is marked by Abol Falls, Pockwockamus Falls, and Debsconeag Falls, alongside numerous still-water areas such as the Abol Deadwater and Pockwockamus Deadwater. This 2018 survey illustrates a complex network of glacial ponds, including Abol Pond, First Debsconeag Lake, and Upper Togue Pond, which have long defined the geography of this timber and recreation corridor.
