Klamath Agency and the city of Chiloquin anchor this 2017 survey of the transition from the Klamath Basin floor to the forested uplands of the Winema National Forest. The landscape is defined by its complex water management and natural wetlands, notably the Wood River Marsh and the sprawling Agency Lake. To the west, the Upper Klamath National Wildlife Refuge preserves the shoreline habitat, while the Wood River Valley is crisscrossed by irrigation works like the Wood River Canal and Sevenmile Canal. Local history is preserved in the location of the Lobert Cem and Wilson Cem, while the Chiloquin State Airport and the route of Modoc Point Rd show the modern connectivity of this high-desert region. The eastern terrain rises sharply toward Steiger Butte, overlooking the winding path of the Williamson River as it approaches the lake.
