Alamo Mesa dominates the southern landscape of this 2023 San Juan County survey, a high desert landform defined by the complex drainage systems of the San Juan Basin. The high-altitude terrain is dissected by the dendritic patterns of Hunter Wash, Willow Wash, and Alamo Wash, which carve through the arid plateaus. These seasonal watercourses underscore the geological character of the region, where water-driven erosion has shaped the distinctive topography. In the eastern portion of the sheet, the protected lands of the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness preserve a world-renowned badland environment. Access to this remote area is facilitated primarily by local infrastructure such as Indian Svc Rte 5 and Indian Svc Rte 5080, reflecting the intersection of protected wilderness and the established transportation routes of the Navajo Nation.
