Lake Powell and the winding course of the San Juan River dominate this desert landscape within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The geography is defined by deep incisions in the earth, most notably the dramatic Great Bend of the San Juan River, where the river loops tightly through the canyon floor. High plateaus and flat-topped mesas provide the primary vertical relief, including Wilson Mesa and Grey Mesa, which overlook the complex network of drainages below.
