Lake Almanor defines the northern edge of this high-altitude landscape, where residential developments like Lake Almanor West and Almanor meet the protected timberlands of Lassen National Forest and Plumas National Forest. The geography here is marked by significant water management infrastructure, including the Butt Valley Tunnel which connects the primary lake to the Butt Valley Reservoir to the south. Historically significant locales such as Prattville and Longville are situated along the drainage of Butt Cr and Humbug Cr, while landmarks like Bunnel Point on the Almanor Peninsula reach into the water. To the southeast, the landscape transitions toward Ohio Valley, with distinct terrain features such as Red Rock and Cantebury Gulch punctuating the forested ridges.
